For the last home game of the season, the Redbacks women experienced the hottest weather of the year so far in their second game against Rheinland Lions.
7 ladies stepped onto the field, including Bente, who made the long journey to Frankfurt in order to support the Redbacks. Since Rheinland only brought 8 players, 7 vs 7 was played and the Redbacks Women had no substitute. Andrew, the men’s captain, stepped in to coach. Since some key Rheinland players were not present, the pre-game talk consisted of techniques in not just the defensive end, but also the offensive end.
Like the last game against Munich Kangaroos, the ladies had a successful first quarter and managed to keep the Rheinland ladies from having too many goal oppurtunities.
In the second quarter however, the ladies started to feel the heat. Some particularly strong play from Rheinland meant a lot of the time was spent in the defensive end.
The half-time break provided some time to recover and get out of the sun. This was shown in the 3rd quarter when Liv TW scored a goal, and the Ruck, Louisa, scored a behind. Some great tackles from Lila, who was playing her first game, helped the ball to stay out of the Redback’s defensive end as much as possible.
Due to tiredness because of lack of substitutes and the weather, the 4th quarter unfortunately did not go so well as the previous quarter. Rheinland were still full of energy and managed to increase their lead by quite a significant margin. However, Lila managed to provide a well needed break in defensive play, by catching multiple great marks.
Despite the loss, the ladies have definitely shown further improvement since the last game and worked together well as a team.
